Truck transportation added 4,800 jobs—but one month is not a trend

The latest BLS data show truck transportation employment rose by 4,800 jobs in August to 1,470,300, the highest level since October. The sector still had about 10,000 fewer jobs than a year earlier.

What happened

FreightWaves’ Sept. 4 analysis of the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report says truck transportation employment increased by 4,800 jobs in August to 1,470,300. That is the sector’s highest level since October. However, employment remained about 10,000 jobs below a year earlier, and analysts cautioned that one strong month does not establish a lasting hiring trend.

What drivers should do

For CDL students and job seekers, the increase is a useful signal—not a promise that every carrier or market is hiring. Keep the CDL, medical status, driving record, employment history and training documents organized. Apply through a carrier’s verified website or a known recruiter, confirm the terminal and operating area, and never send money, banking information or identity documents through an unverified text message or social-media account.

Why this matters to our community

Compare written offers using realistic weekly miles and total compensation. Ask about W-2 or contractor status, mileage or hourly rate, guaranteed pay, detention, layover, orientation and training pay, home time, benefits, equipment, safety policies and every deduction. Small carriers should not add drivers based on one monthly headline; verify sustained freight, truck utilization, insurance cost and cash flow first. Useful English terms include payroll employment, year over year, applicant, guaranteed pay, detention pay, deductions and employee classification.
