1. Confirm eligibility

Review identity, lawful presence, state residency, age and Social Security Number requirements with your licensing agency.

2. Complete a DOT physical

Visit a Certified Medical Examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry and keep your Medical Examiner’s Certificate current.

3. Earn your CLP

Pass General Knowledge plus Air Brakes, Combination or endorsement tests required for the vehicle you intend to operate.

4. Complete ELDT

Finish applicable theory and behind-the-wheel training with providers listed in the Training Provider Registry.

5. Pass the skills test

Demonstrate Vehicle Inspection, Basic Control Skills and On-Road driving in a representative vehicle.
