$105 million truck-lease fraud case: verify the asset before investing

Federal prosecutors allege that investors paid $25,000–$40,000 per truck for guaranteed weekly returns in a semi-truck lease program. The defendant is presumed innocent; drivers and small carriers should treat guaranteed passive-income claims as a signal for independent verification.

What happened

On Sept. 25, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida announced that Kristopher Lunsford was indicted on six wire-fraud counts and two money-laundering counts in a semi-truck lease-investment case. Prosecutors allege that investors typically paid $25,000–$40,000 per truck after being promised guaranteed weekly payouts of about $1,000–$1,250 while the operator would buy the equipment, hire drivers, obtain insurance and run the trucks. The government says more than $105 million was solicited from December 2023 through May 2025. These are allegations: an indictment is a charge, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

What drivers should do

A truck, lease or impressive fleet count does not by itself prove that an investment produces freight revenue. Before sending money, independently verify the legal company name, physical address, ownership history, truck title and VIN, liens, insurance, operating authority and where each unit is actually working. Ask for written contracts, audited financial statements, bank and revenue records that connect the promised payout to real operations, and a clear explanation of fees, control of the asset, exit terms and loss risk. Use an independent attorney and CPA; do not rely only on a salesperson, dashboard, social-media testimonial, truck photo or a guarantee of fixed returns.

Why this matters to our community

Anyone who believes they invested in the charged program should preserve contracts, wire confirmations, bank records, emails, texts, voice messages, advertisements, VINs and payment histories. DOJ directs potential victims to the FBI Truck Lease Fraud questionnaire and lists TruckLeaseFraud@fbi.gov for questions; the DOJ case page also provides victim-rights and hearing information. Do not pay an unknown person who promises to recover funds or asks for another fee. For Uzbek drivers and small carriers, useful English terms include guaranteed return, passive income, lease investment, vehicle title, lien, audited financial statements, wire confirmation, indictment and presumed innocent.
