What happened

The American Trucking Associations announced on Sept. 11 that the 38th annual National Truck Driver Appreciation Week will run Sept. 13–19, 2026. ATA says the nationwide observance recognizes nearly 3.6 million professional drivers, who safely move more than 72% of U.S. freight tonnage. Motor carriers, state trucking associations and suppliers are expected to hold events, and FMCSA is also highlighting the week.

What drivers should do

A meal, gift bag, raffle or thank-you message can be genuine recognition, but it does not change the driver’s employment or lease terms. If a company offers a cash bonus, extra pay, fuel credit or incentive, ask whether it is taxable, what work or safety conditions apply, when it will be paid and whether it can be charged back. Keep the written announcement and compare it with the settlement or pay statement. Never pay a fee or share an account password to claim an appreciation-week prize.

Why this matters to our community

CDL students and job seekers should treat recruiting promotions carefully. Verify the carrier through official FMCSA records, obtain the complete pay package in writing and compare guaranteed pay, realistic miles, detention, layover, home time, benefits, equipment, training repayment and deductions—not just a headline CPM or one-time bonus. Small carriers can use the week to thank drivers with clear written recognition, listen to safety and scheduling concerns, and correct payroll or reimbursement issues promptly. Useful English terms include driver appreciation, recognition bonus, eligibility, taxable benefit, payroll deduction, chargeback and written terms.
