What happened
FMCSA says it has temporarily suspended enforcement of the federal biennial-update requirement while the agency stabilizes Motus, its USDOT Registration System launched May 19. Registrants whose required update was due on or after June 1, 2026, will receive additional time and will not have their USDOT number inactivated solely for missing that update during the pause. FMCSA has not announced an end date and says it will provide advance notice before enforcement resumes.
What drivers should do
This is temporary relief, not a permanent cancellation of the biennial-update obligation. Small interstate carriers should keep company name, address, contact information, power-unit count, driver count and mileage records accurate, preserve screenshots and confirmation numbers, and monitor the official FMCSA page. If a registration issue affects dispatch or an inspection, contact the FMCSA Registration Customer Service Center at 1-800-832-5660 or submit one support ticket through the official webform; FMCSA specifically advises users not to create duplicate tickets for the same case.
Why this matters to our community
Intrastate carriers require extra care. FMCSA notes that they are not subject to the federal biennial-update rule, and Motus no longer offers that filing option to them, but individual states may require recurring FMCSA-record updates. Confirm the rule with the state agency that regulates the carrier before assuming the federal pause applies. Drivers should still verify the legal carrier name and USDOT number on the truck, ELD profile and shipping documents. Useful English terms include biennial update, temporary suspension, USDOT inactivation, registrant, due date, interstate carrier, intrastate carrier and support ticket.
